Our History
The Hoffman® Fabrics story begins in 1924 when Benjamin Hoffman founded the Hoffman California Fabrics company in Los Angeles. In the early years, the company focused on fabric converting, purchasing greige goods and having them printed and dyed.
In the 1950s, Benjamin’s sons Alfred and Howard Hoffman joined the business. Their innovation and creativity established Hoffman as a premier converter of quilting cottons. By the 1970s, the company was designing hundreds of vibrant screen prints annually.
When Howard’s daughter Alice Hoffman took the helm in the 1990s, she led the expansion into digital printing. This allowed for quicker turnaround and more customization options. Alice also focused on growing Hoffman’s batik line, sourcing these soft hand-dyed fabrics directly from artisans in Bali.
Today, led by CEO Alexander Hoffman, the third generation of the Hoffman family upholds the founders’ commitment to quality, creativity, and inspiring designs. Hoffman® Fabrics continues to create innovative fabrics that crafters love to sew and quilt.

- In-house design team – Our talented textile artists conceive fresh prints every season. We don’t buy stock designs or mimic trends. Hoffman artists dream up every playful print and soothing solid in our catalog.
- Printing capabilities – Our state-of-the-art printing facility allows us to rapidly turn original designs into beautiful fabric. This includes screen printing, which produces vivid color and striking definition. We also utilize digital printing for photographic and novelty designs.
- Authentic batiks – For our batik line, we partner with gifted artisans in Bali who hand-dye each yard of fabric using traditional techniques. This gives Hoffman batiks their distinctive cracked patterns and soft, flowing feel that quilters love.
- Quality construction – From thread counts to weave, Hoffman carefully crafts fabrics suited for sewing, quilting, crafts, apparel, and manufacturing. We use premium long-staple cotton, linen, bamboo, and blend fibers. Our quality control team checks every roll.
- Creative collections – Hoffman designers find inspiration in varied places — from landscapes to architecture, foods to folk art. This leads to diverse fabric collections with options for every project. We release new collections 6-8 times per year so quilters always have fresh fabrics to choose from.

- Blenders – Essential solids/blenders in every hue to complement our prints or as stand-alone yardage. Available in broadcloth, batik, linen, flannel, fleece and more.
- Pre-cuts – We offer pre-cut fabric shapes (charm packs, jelly rolls, layer cakes, etc.) in curated collections to eliminate cutting time.
- Notions and tools – Stock up on threads, tapes, trims, buttons, and quilting rulers, tools, and templates. Our seam guide ruler is a bestseller.

How We Give Back
At Hoffman, we believe in supporting arts education and giving back to the communities where we live and work. Here are some of the ways we help:
- The Hoffman Challenge – Every year we invite quilters to create stunning art quilts using specially designed challenge fabrics. The contest awards over $100,000 in prizes.
- Scholarship programs – We fund $5000 scholarships for students of fashion design, fine arts, and STEM programs related to textiles.
- Fabric donations – Hoffman donates printed cotton and batting to organizations that make quilts for at-risk, sick, and foster children.
- Industry education – We sponsor events like QuiltCon, the International Quilt Festival, and Quilts on the Hill to cultivate new generations of sewing enthusiasts.
